Resources for NICU Recovery
As a Christian counselor who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum mental health, I listen to stories every day from moms who have had a variety of experiences on their journey to motherhood. Some of those experiences include the NICU. It’s been my privilege to walk with NICU parents through healing from postpartum trauma, including EMDR therapy trauma, as well as postpartum depression and anxiety.
If you’re a NICU mom, and still trying to make sense of your experience, here are a few resources that you might find helpful:
Books
1) Intensive Parenting; Surviving the Emotional Journey through the NICU
By Deborah Davis AND Mara Tesler Stein
2) How to Heal a Bad Birth: Making Sense, Making Peace, and Moving On
By Melissa Bruijn and Debby Gould
(includes a chapter on the NICU)
Websites
(offers peer-to-peer support, online community, and podcast)
Podcasts
1) NICU Now Podcast (part of Hand to Hold)
When you’ve been affected by the NICU, you want to know that you’re not alone, and that there is hope for you, your baby, and your family. Books, podcasts, support groups, and other community resources are wonderful ways to help you work through the impact of this stressful experience. Counseling can also be a helpful place to find support, education, validation, and healing from trauma. As a counselor who has worked with many NICU moms, I’d love to hear your story.
